Domestic shipments were superb, up 18.2%, with 67.44 million pounds shipped vs. last year’s 57.05 million pounds. Again, adding to grower confidence as sales and shipments are very strong. Export shipments were flat with 191 million pounds shipped, up a modest 0.3% versus a year ago 190.35 million pounds.

Domestic shipments stumbled in September, down 11%, with 55.94 million pounds shipped vs. last year’s 62.84 million pounds. This was likely a function of a low carry-out and lack of availability of more popular varieties and sizes needed for the domestic market.

Domestic shipments continue to show year-over-year growth, up 1% at 62 million pounds shipped in August, that is a very good sign of things to come.  Meanwhile, export shipments, while down 29.5% with 106.23 million pounds shipped versus a year ago 150.60 million pounds, may be affected by timing, which should be made up in the months ahead.

Evidence from the first position report of the new crop year shows that over 290 million pounds have already been received, a 313% increase compared to the same time last year. While the crop is expected to be larger than last year’s, it may not be as robust as initially thought. This increase is more about timing, with the new crop arriving on time, versus last year’s crop, which was late and slow to come in.

Early indicators continue to point to a smaller crop than initially expected and may be closer or below the 2.8 billion-pound estimate that many initially thought was a miss.

August temperatures have returned to more of a norm for this time of year, and the extended forecast also keeps them in the average range. With harvest now in full swing, temperatures will help control moisture for the almonds both on the trees and on the ground prior to sweeping.

The heat dome in California remains in effect as we have had two weeks of temperatures in triple digits. It is expected to last for another 7 days before it drops to the low 90s. Growers will pay close attention as we are still a couple of weeks away from harvest, so trees will still need to be irrigated until that time.

The current crop continues to be thinly traded as supply may be in question as we head to the end of the crop year.  This will most likely be the case through harvest until new crop is available and all early orders are fulfilled.  We saw the May shipment report released on June 11th, and it was the second-largest shipping month for any May period in history.
