History of onions
Onions are one of the world’s oldest cultivated plants. Researchers all agree on the fact that onions have been cultivated for around 5,000 years. However, there is no official consensus regarding where the first onion was grown, since the crop leaves behind little trace evidence. Although some archaeologists, botanists and food historians believe the crop originated in Asia.
Onions were first introduced to Great Britain by the Romans, while Native Americans had already been using a highly pungent variety of wild onions in their cooking. It is presumed onions were consumed long before farming or even writing was invented, as they grew in the wild, across the world. Onions have also been utilized for medicinal purposes throughout history. It’s mentioned in the Bible and was even found in the tomb of an Egyptian King.
