Where are onions cultivated?

One of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, onions are an herbaceous biennial plant that belongs to the amaryllis family. Since it can withstand a wide range of growing conditions, the crop is grown all around the world. Here at olam food ingredients, our AtSource verified, white onions are grown in the western United States, where we offer full-traceability and supply chain control.

We work closely with our farmer partners during planting, cultivation and harvest to ensure high-quality products. After harvesting, our onions are delivered to our state-of-the-art processing facilities where they are diced into ¼ inch to ½ inch pieces, giving noticeable piece identity.

Diced onion applications

So, when can I use diced onion? Diced onions have many applications, including:

  • As an addition to fresh salsas
  • Incorporated into vegetable blends
  • Soaked in water, then used in place of fresh onions, where you want large, identifiable pieces of onion
  • Mixed into dips, sauces and marinades to add more flavor

History of onions

Onions may be one of the earliest cultivated crops in history, originating first in either Central Asia, Iran or West Pakistan. The exact origins of the crop are unknown, due to its size and the fact that the tissue leaves little to no trace evidence. However, researchers believe our predecessors were probably consuming wild onions, long before farming was even invented.

Since the crop grew wild in various regions across the world, it has more than likely been consumed for thousands of years — researchers believe around 5,000. Onions are believed to be one of the earliest cultivated crops due to its adaptability, as it was easy to transport and could grow on a variety of different soils and in different climates.
