Where is ginger cultivated?

A light yellow powder that combines the bright flavor of citrus with a gentle heat, ginger is mainly grown in five countries, India, China, Nepal, Nigeria and Thailand. Here at olam food ingredients, we source our ginger from our trusted grower partners in Nigeria. The country is the single largest grower of the root in Africa and fourth largest ginger origin in the world.

After it is harvested, the ginger is flaked and dried at local processors before it is shipped to our state-of-the-art facility in Vietnam plant for final processing. In Vietnam we will test, clean, and grind the ginger into powder.

Applications for bulk ginger

So, when can I use ginger? Ginger has many applications, including:

  • As an addition to dessert and beverage preparations
  • Used commonly in Asian, Indian, Caribbean and African cuisines
  • Combined with boiling water to make a medicinal tea
  • In savory applications such as spice rubs, tagines and marinades

History of ginger

Ginger, of the family Zingiberaceae, is an herbaceous perennial plant. The history of the root dates back over 5,000 years and it is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia. Ginger was used in ancient India and China and by the 1st century CE, ginger arrived in the Mediterranean region.

It has been used in Asian cooking for centuries and was also used heavily in the Carribean after it was discovered the spice could easily grow in the region.
