A basil farm in western Egypt is modeling leadership in farm management. Thirty farmers have the autonomy to make key decisions regarding cultivation, irrigation and fertilizers on the equally distributed land. As a result, sustainable production initiatives are self-driven.

Our water stewardship approach is closely aligned with the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard covering five main water outcomes for Olam’s sites, the community and the larger catchment area. Across our supply chains, we use the geospatial mapping tools created by the Water Research Institute to understand our current water risk in each spice geography.

Our team in India has recently on boarded their first supply chain onto Olam’s AtSource Plus platform. The team went through the arduous process of collecting data related to over 100 AtSource social and environmental metrics representing 6 farmer groups and 288 farmers growing red chilli.

Olam Spices’ chili and turmeric products have earned a new seal, one with the little green frog aka the Rain Forest Alliance (RFA) certification. Both supply chains, which consist of 100+ farmers and over 140 hectares of land, are now certified to supply over 600 metric tons of RFA chili and turmeric.

In our chili pepper production in India, Olam Spices is taking a holistic approach to farming- using regenerative strategies to enhance natural systems and support resilient communities. So far, we have conducted trainings in a variety of topics related to eco-friendly pest management and soil health.

To prevent land, water, and air pollution, the Olam Spices team in India created a recycling process for used pesticide containers. The team partnered with Green Waves Environmental Solutions to facilitate workshops on Waste Management and handle the recycling and disposal of cleaned containers.

Vietnamese soil requires compost for structural improvement. Last year, our Vietnam site started a compost program consisting of coee waste, rice husks, and cow manure. The program produces 6,000 MT of compost annually
